Now that we’re already well into the year, some interesting 2023 fashion trends are emerging that look like they’re here to stay. I’m excited about these, more than I have been in the past, as we take a step away from the cosy casual (that covid forced us into) and start to play around more.
I actually just got back from my trip to Sydney, and it’s reminded me I need to explore more again when it comes to fashion. I swear every girl there looks like they’ve walked out of a catalogue, even if they’re in a singlet and jeans. I’ve become so used to buying something I like in every colour, sticking to the same old silhouettes that I feel comfortable in, and my wardrobe is starting to look like an homage to blazers. Practical, sustainable, but very boring.
So as I attempt to revive my dead wardrobe, I thought I’d share some of my favourite trends from 2023 – and ones that I’ll be investing in over the next couple of months. Even though ‘trends’ has become somewhat of a no-no in the industry lately, I’ve picked out my favourite ones with longevity in mind. After all – no one wants to invest in clothes they’ll want to get rid of in 3 months time.
Maxi Denim Skirts

Denim skirts have always been a staple in any Parisian girl’s wardrobe, and this trend has finally made its way onto our shores. This year it’s all about the maxi length. Whether it’s with a simple tank top or a bandeau, the maxi length denim skirt is the perfect bottom to wear out – day or night.

Elevated Basics

Say goodbye to boring basic tops and skirts. This year, fashion is taking a more elevated approach to basic pieces. Think sophisticated knit tops paired with low-rise maxi skirt sets. Or, asymmetric necklines and baggy denim jeans. It really is all about the cut and fabrications this year, which is what makes these pieces stand out from the classics you already own.

Bold Metallics

You might be a little scared from the Y2K era, like me, but metallic pieces are back (in the best way). Especially silver metallic pants and slingback heels. These pieces are perfect for adding a pop of glam to any outfit. I personally love something like the Prada Slingback Heels in Silver, paired with a baggy denim jean. You can just see the pointed tip out of the bottom of your pants and it makes a statement while still looking refined *chefs kisses*.

Big Baggage

No, not that kind. Bring everything you need with you – this year’s most functional trend is an oversized handbag. Think oversized sleek designs in a mix of colours, from minimal to super bright. I think this trend goes hand-in-hand with elevated basics, taking an otherwise simple outfit and giving it a designer feel. Think Matilda Djerf; sophisticated, Scandi and somewhat eclectic.

Worn-In Oversized Leather Jackets

I really teeter on the edge of feminine and masculine/biker girl when it comes to dressing, so of course, this is a favourite trend of mine. This season, the vintage look is in, and oversized worn in vintage leather jackets are making a huge comeback. The key here is to look sleek (less pockets and belt detailing, more 90’s moto) and preloved but not distressed. The best part about it though? You can find these in your local op-shop easily. Throw one over your favorite t-shirt and jeans for an easy chuck-on-and-go vibe, or your elevated basics to make a statement. I think these are going to take over from the previous seasons blazer popularity.

Sheer Knit Tops

Sheer knit tops are perfect for layering and adding texture to any outfit. You can layer them over a basic tank top or satin bralet, then add a structured blazer. I don’t know why, but there’s something about showing a bit of skin under a structured blazer that gives off that ‘it’ girl vibe. Again though, this is all about quality. Opt for sheer wool blends, rather than mesh, if you want something with longevity.

Puddle Denim Jeans

Baggy denim is a must-have for the season. I love how you can dress them up with some statement earrings and a pretty top, or keep it casual with an oversized t-shirt. This trend has been around for a while now but this year think Scandinavian style cuts and colours paired with cool vintage belts. They always do it best, making the most boring outfits look cool somehow.

Satin Maxi Skirts

This trend is back, and the newest iteration is a change of length. Maxi, always go maxi. This is an easy one for those of your already wearing oversized trousers, because you can easily style them the same. With sneakers, with blazers, with heels. The possibilities are endless and the result is always going to look polished, but comfortable. And let’s face it, now that we’ve had a taste, we will still always want comfort over anything else.
